Global warming is a topic very much in vogue at the moment. A former American Vice-President won a Nobel Prize for making a documentary on the subject. Studies from all over the world are producing terrifying statistics and proving that due to our carelessness and negligence, we are fast approaching a bleak and unstable future. Scientists who’ve been warning world leaders of the consequences of carbon emissions and deforestation for years are sitting back with concerned I-told-you-so expressions on their faces. The point of no return is almost upon us, but there’s still time for action. Recycling is one of the most important things that we as individuals can do and if you think that there are some things that simply can’t be recycled, think again. Dirty old run down shoes, that you would prefer to never see the light of day again, can be recycled and used for the betterment of sports facilities in ways you never dreamed of.
In an ingenious commitment to sustainability and a determination to stop the waste of salvageable materials, Nike created the Reuse-a Shoe programme. The programme began in 1993 and so far over 20 million pairs of athletic shoes have been recycled and used in over 250 sport surfaces. The surfacing of sports grounds is part of the Let Me Play initiative, Nike’s international community investment programme.
In the spirit of environmental responsibility, they not only recycle shoes that have been handed in, but they also recycle the material left over from the shoe manufacturing process. The shoes and left-over material is ground up and purified into a substance called “Nike Grindâ€. Nike grind then becomes Nike Grind Rubber, Nike Grind Foam and Nike Grind Upper.
Sports surfacing companies incorporate the grind into their product ranges and produce quality running tracks, tennis courts, soccer fields and safe playground surfaces. One of the goals of the Let Me Play initiative, and an upshot of surfacing sports facilities, is maximising the power of sport to change the lives of young people. They also hope to contribute towards the creation of cohesive communities and positive social change.
How many shoes does it take to make a tennis court? Not your common, everyday question, is it? On average a surface comprises of 10-20% of the grind according to weight. A tennis court generally uses 2500 pairs of shoes. Full soccer pitches and running tracks use about 75,000 pairs of shoes. Most of the other facilities surfaced use 2500 pairs. As can be seen from the figures, the Reuse-a-Shoe programme is a very effective shoe recycling method.

But it seems they are determined to make up for any shortcomings as a company by doing what they can for the environment and the upliftment of communities. Notoriously influential and powerful, they are now an example to other major companies as leaders in meeting their recycling responsibilities.
